7 Ways To Create Killer Headlines

by Alex

How do you create killer headlines? Go to the supermarket for inspiration.

When I was a lot younger (read: last week!) I was sucked in by magazine headlines that screamed, “Brad Walks Out”, “Kim Takes a Kiwi Lover”, “Katie Walks Out” (original huh? – and yes, it was in the same week) – only to find out that Brad had walked out to get the groceries, Kim had a drink at a bar with a Kiwi (slang for New Zealander) and Katie had to get her hair done!

The headlines got me, but those magazines will never get my money again. Why? Because they didn’t deliver.

I was ready for something salacious, something so juicy my heart was already pumping with expectation. I wanted my money’s worth. Instead I felt ripped off.

My point here is simple.

Create killer headlines – but make sure you deliver. Otherwise that might be the last time you see that prospect again.

So let’s get to it. How do you create killer headlines that get attention, get your content opened, AND leave your reader SATISFIED!

 1 ) Go National Enquirer!

create killer headlinesThere are so many headlines screaming for our attention. How much time do we have or do we allow ourselves to get distracted?

If we’re disciplined, we’ll do our best to ignore anything that doesn’t stand out and smack us between the eyeballs.

So this might get your attention.

“Kim’s Fake Butt Exposed”.  Kris Humphries apparently has cell phone video footage to prove it.

Sad – but it gets your attention. So when bloggers are looking to get attention fast, they create killer headlines by going National Enquirer.

But be warned however, if you create killer headlines by going down this path you must deliver in your content. If you don’t, people like me will never trust you again.

Also, you must KNOW your market. If you don’t, prepare yourself for negative comments. And if you can’t handle the heat, get outta the kitchen.

The most common example we see in our industry is, “ Is MLM XYZ a Scam? Don’t join MLM XYZ until you’ve read this”.

You read it only to find out that someone who is a huge proponent of XYZ has written the article. It gets your attention – but do you feel a little duped? Yeah maybe, so use this with discretion.

2 ) Think Crazy Outta The Box

Very similar to “Go National Enquirer!” but this is about being a little oddball. People are looking to be entertained. You will stand out if you can get really creative.

For Example: “Shrek’s Super Sales Tips” – he’s adorable, but do you really think he could sell something?

One I found the other day by Blogging Master Charles Heflin who knows how to create killer headlines was spectacular, “I spotted Bigfoot on your website doing social marketing”.

Who is NOT going to be compelled to open that?

 3 ) Say it Ain’t True

twitter is deadWe all believe in certain truths. The sun rotates around the earth, Andy Roddick will win the US Open, & your dog will love you forever.

So imagine reading a headline that contradicts your beliefs. Do you think you might read on to see if this writer has a compelling argument? You betcha!

So if you want to create killer headlines using this style, again, make sure you deliver. Your content must live up to your headline, otherwise, once again, this reader will not return to you.

For Example:  “Twitter is Dead,” then make a case as to why you believe this to be true.

 4 ) Curious George

This is a toned down version of “Go National Enquirer!” Arouse curiosity in your readers, but again – deliver.

For Example:  “What Never To Put In Your Headline.”

5 ) Make it Hollywood Baby

This is so much fun. Take something from pop culture, that’s relatable to your target audience, and create killer headlines by using it in your headline.

For Example:  “Kim Kardashian’s Marriage Secrets.”

I know, it’s ‘pick on Kim’ day, but she pulls. If you don’t believe me do a Google search on Kim Kardashian and as of writing this post she’s pulling 153,000,000 hits.

Alternatively, do a Google search on Arnold Schwarzenegger and as of writing this post he’s getting 67,800,000 hits.

I’m just sayin’.

 6 ) Keep it Real

Give your readers a straight benefit – how refreshing!

For Example:  “How To Make 100% Commissions – No Bull!”

 7 ) Juxtapose

Get this right and you’ll cream the competition. Why? Because it’s an art form.

For Example:  “How Newbies Can Make Money Like The Gurus.”

Put two opposing themes together in one sentence and you’ll stand out. And if you really do want to know how newbies can make money like the guru’s then take a few minutes to CLICK THIS LINK. You won’t be disappointed.

So there you have it – 7 ways to create killer headlines.

Have FUN with this – but ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS remember your target audience.
